ABOUT THE TOUR
A tour of Anderson, Franklin, and Woodford Counties
Experience firsthand the history of wine and bourbon on a trip through the rolling Bluegrass. Visit sites in Frankfort, Lawrenceburg and Midway to learn how these two beverages have influenced the growth and industry to what it is today. You will see how these spirits are produced and what acclaim they have brought to each community. With the largest acreage winery and fifty percent of the bourbon industry within a half-hour drive, this tour will definitely offer you the chance to enjoy the flavors of the central Kentucky region.
Discover Rebecca and Ruth, schoolteachers and longtime friends who invented the now-famous chocolate confection, the bourbon ball. You can picnic on the porch at Woodford Reserve Distillery where the "official" bourbon of the Kentucky Derby is produced. Walk the grounds of yet another famous bourbon distillery where long-ago its executive served his turkey-hunting friends a concoction that became know as "Wild Turkey." Hear the story of a smitten Kentucky gentleman as he "wooed" his beautiful Southern belle into marriage and named the Four Roses bourbon in her honor. Follow the pathway of the ancient buffalo to Buffalo Trace and taste their spirits while touring the historic site that was one of only four distilleries to remain open during prohibition.
You can plant your feet firmly on the ground at Lover's Leap Vineyard and Winery nestled snuggly within the hills along the Kentucky River. Not only will you see first-hand this family owned-and-operated vineyard but taste the fruitful rewards of their efforts. Equus Run is the perfect place to enjoy a picnic, take in a game of croquet or bocce, meander through the promenade gardens or explore the scenic South Elkhorn Creek. There you will see the traditional production methods used in developing their award-winning wines.
Familiarize yourself with the history of the wine and bourbon industry of Kentucky at the Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History. Within a short walking distance of the Center, you can visit two historic homes to learn the significance of wine and bourbon in early Kentucky.
